Bho 2010

Bho, Sanskrit for ‘Hey, you’, speaks to human experiences and relationships within the world and its body. Bho is a spontaneous, intimate encounter in which both dancer and spectator become intentionally drawn into the human experience through the use of language, purposeful music and playful, expressive dancing. This dance production is
played out by five of our energetic and charismatic dancers: Vraja Sundari Keilman (the Netherlands), Ilaria Angelicchio (Italy), Annlydie Groenen (Belgium), Rasarani Keilman (the Netherlands) and Aleksey Furdak (Latvia).

They will be carried by the music of Bjork, Niraj Chag, The Beatles, Bibio, Unwed Sailor and Samadhi’s favorite composer, Nitin Sawhney. The performance will be complimented by several art film projections created by the acclaimed Levina Tameris (the Netherlands), Lars Steenhoff (the Netherlands) and  Samadhi dancer and choreographer Vraja Sundari Keilman.

The second half of the evening will present a program of diverse performances such as a classical Bharata Natyam dance by Aleksey Furdak, an urban twist of contemporary and acrobatics by Sarada Sarita Keilman and Liam O’Callaghan, contemporary ballet in ‘Suzy’s Room’  by Rasarani and Vraja Sundari Keilman and several soulful songs performed live by Rasarani Keilman.

Take a look at how ‘Bho’ came to be…

Filmed by Lars Steenhoff, this slow-movement film of the behind-the-scenes work that went into ‘Bho’ gives you a glimpse of the elongated movements of the piece, much of the passion and energy along with some of the raw expressions of body and emotion. We hope it will inspire you!

Samadhi at the Vondelpark a great success!

On Friday July 30 Samadhi Dance Company was invited by Glenn Westphal of New Dance Studio to perform a 30 minutes version of ‘Bho’ as part of their collaboration with the Vondelpark Openluchttheater. This collaboration was under the title ‘NEW DANCE STUDIOS presents FRIENDS’ and was organized by Glenn Westphal in collaboration with several new dance choreographers such as Esther Nederpelt and Sagi Gross. The place started filling up from 19:30 and at the time Samadhi was ready to perform the Openluchttheater was absolutely packed; at least 500 to 600 people were present and the atmosphere was just magical! The performance of ‘Bho’ and the dancers were not only  received with huge enthusiasm and loud cheers, the dancers also had an incredible time sharing their stories with the cheerful crowd and the responses were more than wonderful, we were just amazed !!! Needless to say we thank New Dance Studios and the organizers of the Vondelpark Openluchttheater so much for this wonderful opportunity, it was incredible!!

Summer in Radhadesh

This summer Samadhi again had the pleasure to perform at the annual Summer Festival in the lovely Radhadesh and this year we were happy to present a new 30 min. version of ‘Bho’, this time with our Bharata Natyam dancer Aleksey Furdak joining the cast. The wonderful audience responded with great enthusiasm and Bho was received with open arms, it was truly an amazing experience for the team! Needless to say the dancers left Radhadesh with a huge smile on their face and already look forward to their next summer in Belgium!

‘A special mention goes to the dancers from the Samadhi Dance Company who took time out of their busy schedule to perform their new piece, “Bho.” Their performances were stunning. We hope to see them again soon!’  By Kancana -Vali.

A Few Days on Another Planet

Inspired by our lovely time in Radhadesh here’s what our dancer Aleksey Furdak has to say about this experience:

“…I think I have found what is needed for happiness. A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people to       whom it  is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to having it done to them, and work which one hopes may be of some use. Then rest, nature, art, love for one’s neighbor. Such is my idea of happiness….”
-Leo Tolstoy-

Radhadesh… Probably the most beautiful and magical place that I’ve seen. Just because it brings you to another dimension where the art of being here and now and understanding that your true nature is bliss seems so easy. Everything there reminds you of it: a flower that just grows in a grassland or a bird just flying around. That is so easy- just breathing and simply being. Easy but somehow as we rush through life in a modern world we seem to forget this simple truth. So we constantly need something to remind us that life is not about it. I guess few days spent in Radhadesh was such a reminder for Samadhi team.

There is one song from old Russian cartoon which says that “there is nothing better in this world than travelling together with friends. All roads are dear to us. We bring joy to people with our art and our happiness is to live such a life “. I always wanted to come to a point when this simple children song would become my personal experience. And here I am. Dancing. Dancing and travelling together with friends. Dancing for the joy of others. Dancing for the pleasure of Divine. Dancing and being happy.

But what makes performances in Radhadesh so special? Well, first of all I guess it is the audience. Natya Shastra- ancient Indian treatise on dance- says that in order to have suuccesful performance not only dancer but also audience should be qualified. Performance is dialogue. So in order to understand each other those involved in the dialogue should speak about the matter which is understandable for both. And there all of us spoke language of the heart.

Speaking for myself, another reason of special feeling while performing in Radhadesh is the presence of Divinity there. Because you do it as an offering without expecting anything. When dance comes from your heart and not from your ego. A story af a famous medieval Indian musician Tansen comes to my mind in this regard. Tansen was a  court musician and he was considered the best musician of his time. But once Emperor heard Tansen’s teacher playing and his music touched Emperor’s soul way deeper than Tansen’s music. Then Emperor asked Tansen, “How is it that you cannot play as soulfully as your teacher does?”    Tansen replied, “I play for name and fame. I play for you. He plays for God. Here is the difference. If I played for God—for God in you, for God in everyone—only then would my music be supernatural, heavenly, supremely soulful and perfect.”
